African Violet Watercolor

Today's post is a Watercolor of African Violets for my sister-in-law, Michelle's Birthday.  She loves African Violets and grows them really well.

Skeleton dive sketch

This is a red chalk experiment with a diving skeleton.  Sketching skeletons are part of the way you develop your anatomy skills.  Next would be to add the muscles and then clothing.

I worked on this last night and tonight, it is pencil, white chalk on grey paper. This is modeled after a Michelangelo study from 400 years ago.

Jack Rabbit - Block-in

I started this oil painting of a Jack Rabbit visiting a bird bath to get a drink in the desert heat.  I have blocked in the basic shales and colors.  I need to add the reflection in the water and finish the rocks behind the feet and body.

Kneeling man Robe study

I am currently reading the Walter Isaacson book on Leonardo Di Vinci.  In it Leonardo spends a lot of his youth studying the way folds of clothing drape over the human body.  This is a study after a figure and cloth study by a German artist Mathias Grunewald in the 1500s.  I used grey paper, black pencil and white chalk.

Toga Drapery study

This is modeled after a Leonardo Da Vinci piece.  Leonard spent a lot of time as an apprentice studying the figure and how clothing and cloth covered the body and how the folds reflect light and retain shadows.  This was done on grey paper with black pencil and white chalk.

I worked on another drapery and folds study done on grey paper.  I used white chalk and pencil to work on the highlights and the shadows in the folds.

Tonight's sketch is a study of figure and drapery draped across a body.  I used grey paper with blck pencil and white chalk.

This is a sketch from today, it is modeled after one done by Da Vinci.  This was done on grey paper with pencil and white chalk.

Trees sketched in brown ink

So on this snowy day, I tried to experiment with doing trees in just brown ink.  Sort of okay, not everything works, but more practice and experiments are the path to improvements.

This is tonight's post.  This is done in brown ink and two tones of brown pencils.  Probably warmer in this than the outside temp here in Maryland.  Staying warm inside by the fire.

Happy New Year's Day

No big resolutions for 2018. I plan to just keep drawing and painting as part of the work towards 10,000 hours.  Happy New Year's to you all.
